For photo and video brands
Marketing & Events for photo, video and lighting brands
Behind the Shoot develops made-to-measure activations for camera, lighting, accessory and software brands, for a specific region, product or audience. And we organise our own European tour and roadshow events, which brands can join as a partner.
Inspiration and activation events for creators
We have years of experience organising inspiration and activation events for photographers, hybrid shooters and creators: masterclasses, workshops and roadshows, most of them sold out within days.
Over the years we have built a large international network of makers, brands, distributors and retailers. That lets us bring the right people together in the right market, and reach specific audiences and regions with precision.
Why brands work with us
Professionals are hard to reach with ads. They trust makers they follow, their peers and what they have tried themselves. That is where we bring your brand: on set, in their hands, in a workflow they recognise.
Your gear in their hands
Participants work a full day with your gear and see how a leading maker uses it.
Shared with complementary brands
Brands from different categories share the investment and each other's networks.
Content that goes deeper than an ad
Aftermovie, behind the scenes and custom content that show your gear at work.
Events that sell out
Most of our events and roadshows sold out within days.
Two ways to work with us
We think along with your brand and build an activation made to measure for a region, a product or an audience. Next to that, we organise our own European tour and roadshow events, which brands can join as a partner.

Frequently asked questions
Questions marketing managers at photo, video, lighting, accessory and software brands ask us about reaching professional photographers, events, launches and campaigns.
Reaching photographers
How can a photo or video brand reach professional photographers?
Professional photographers are a small, well-informed audience that scrolls past most ads. The most direct route is to put your gear in their hands at a moment when they want to learn. At a Behind the Shoot event, professional photographers and hybrid shooters work a full day with the gear of the partner brands, watch how a leading maker uses it in a real shoot and then use it themselves on styled sets. A campaign before and after the event carries that experience online, in their own country and language, so the reach goes far beyond the people in the room.
Why do ads for camera and lighting gear often fail to reach professionals?
Interest targeting on photography mixes professionals with a large group of hobbyists and phone shooters, so much of the budget lands with people who will never buy professional gear. Professionals also trust other sources more than ads: makers they follow, peers, specialist dealers and what they have tried themselves. Brands that want to be considered need to appear in those places, with a message that shows the product in a real workflow instead of a list of specifications.
Where do professional photographers get their information about new gear?
From makers and peers they respect, from professional associations and communities, from education such as workshops and masterclasses, from specialist retailers and rental houses, and from hands-on experience at events. These sources overlap at a good event: the maker, the community, the dealer and the product are in one room. That is why hands-on events tend to influence purchase decisions more than a single campaign.
How do I reach hybrid shooters and videographers with a photo brand?
Hybrid shooters work in photo and video, often on the same job. They respond to content that shows real workflows, to makers who combine both disciplines, and to sets where they can test continuous light, cameras and software for stills and motion. At our events every set has continuous light, so participants can shoot photo and video on the same set, and the campaign targets hybrid shooters as a separate segment.
What is experiential marketing for photography brands?
Experiential marketing lets your audience experience a product instead of only seeing it in an ad. For photography brands that means hands-on time on real sets: the photographer feels how a camera handles, sees how a light shapes a face, and works through a tethered workflow with a specialist nearby. That experience stays with people far longer than a banner or a spec sheet, and it gives your sales team and dealers a warm group to follow up.
Events and activations
How do I organise a photography event for my brand?
Start with the audience and the story, not the venue. Decide who you want in the room, which maker they would travel for, and what they should experience with your product. Then you need a venue with space for sets, professional models, styling, a campaign to fill the room, registrations, content and a follow-up. Organising this alone takes a team months. With Behind the Shoot you join a format that is already built, and share the organisation and the investment with complementary brands. See how it works for brands.
What are good marketing ideas for a camera, lighting or accessory brand?
The ideas that work with professionals have one thing in common: they show the product in a real workflow. Think of a hands-on masterclass with a maker your audience follows, touch-and-try sets at an event, a launch moment where professionals are the first to use a new product, behind-the-scenes content from a real shoot, or a campaign that invites photographers in one country to try your gear. Behind the Shoot combines these in one format, so each part strengthens the others.
Is a trade fair still worth it for a photography brand?
A trade fair gives you visibility among a broad audience, but you compete with hundreds of stands for a few minutes of attention, and most visitors look and walk on. A hands-on event works the other way around: a smaller group of professionals spends a full day with the gear of a few brands, guided by a maker they follow. Many brands use both: the fair for broad presence and dealers, and events for depth and conversion.
Should we sponsor a photography workshop, a festival or run our own event?
Sponsoring gives you a logo and some visibility, but you rarely control how your product is used. Running your own event gives full control, but also the full cost and organisation. A shared format sits in between: your gear is part of the program and used on set, you bring your own network, you meet the networks of complementary brands, and the organisation is handled for you.
Why does a shared event work better than organising one yourself?
One brand on its own pays the full bill, reaches only its own network and needs a team for months of organisation. In the Behind the Shoot format, complementary brands join forces: camera, light, print, software and accessories together, in one workflow the photographer recognises. They share the investment, each bring their own network and meet each other's audiences. Behind the Shoot handles the concept, the venue, the makers, the models, the campaign and the content.
Which types of brands take part?
Brands in complementary categories: camera and lenses, flash lighting, continuous light, print, editing, tethering and software, and studio accessories and smart tools. Because the categories complement each other, brands appear side by side in one workflow instead of competing for attention.
Launches and regional markets
How do I launch a new camera, lens or light to professional photographers?
Give the launch a moment where professionals use the product for the first time, with a maker who shows what it can do in a real shoot. Build a campaign before that moment so the right people are in the room, and a follow-up afterwards that carries the content online and leads to the dealer. An event gives a launch something ads cannot: first-hand experience and real images made with the product.
How can we grow our brand in a new European country?
Start with a market-specific activation: a campaign in the local language, a maker the local audience respects, and a hands-on event in a city that matters for your dealer network. Programmatic advertising lets us target professional photographers and hybrid shooters in that country precisely, before and after the event. That combination builds awareness and trust faster than translated global campaigns.
Can you organise an activation for one country or region?
Yes. We develop activations for a specific market, from a single event in one city to a campaign that covers a whole country or region. The format, the maker and the language are chosen to fit that market and its dealer network. It can be a standalone event, a stop on our tour, a campaign only, or a combination.
Can we join the European tour?
Yes. The European Tour 2027 visits six cities on the shortlist: Paris, Copenhagen, London, Munich, Amsterdam and Madrid. Every stop has three speakers and five touch-and-try sets. The route is set together with the partner brands, based on their markets and dealer networks, so the tour goes where your brand wants to grow.
How do we support our dealers and retailers with marketing?
Dealers sell more when customers arrive already convinced. Events and campaigns can lead people to the store with promo codes, dealer promotions and follow-up campaigns after the event, and dealers can be part of the activation in their own city. That gives the dealer a reason to push your brand, and gives you a way to see what the activation sold.
Campaigns and targeting
What is programmatic advertising and why is it useful for photo brands?
Programmatic advertising is automated, data-driven buying of online ad space across many websites and apps. For photo brands it is useful because it can target a narrow professional audience precisely: photographers, videographers, studios and hybrid shooters, per country or region, including on photography-specific sites. It reaches people beyond your own followers and beyond the networks of partners and makers.
Can we run a programmatic campaign without an event?
Yes. We can run targeted campaigns that reach professional photographers, hybrid shooters and prosumers per country or region, for example around a launch or a dealer promotion. They work best when they point to something people can experience or learn from, such as an event, a demo, a tutorial or content from a maker, because professionals respond to substance more than to a product ad.
How do we target professional photographers instead of hobbyists?
Start from people you know are professionals and expand from there: customer lists of professional product lines, event registrations, dealer customers and people who watched in-depth content. Use lookalike audiences from those lists, target per country in the local language, and separate professionals, hybrid shooters and prosumers into their own segments with their own message. Report professional reach separately from general brand reach.
Who does a Behind the Shoot campaign target?
Primarily professional photographers and hybrid shooters, including studios and videographers. Secondarily prosumers who invest in top-end gear. Each segment gets a message that fits what they shoot and buy, in the language of the country.
How long should an event campaign run?
Professional gear is not bought on the day of an event. An edition runs twelve weeks: a campaign that builds the audience before the event, the event day itself, and a follow-up that carries the content online and leads people to the dealer. Measuring over the weeks after the event shows what the activation really delivered.
Content and creators
What content does a brand get from an event?
Next to the exposure of the event and the campaign, we produce an aftermovie, behind-the-scenes video and photography. On request we create content made specifically for your brand, for example a tutorial with the maker or product shots from the set. Participants also share their own work from the day, which gives your brand authentic content from real users.
Why does event content work better than a standard product ad?
Event content shows real photographers experiencing your gear, and a leading maker using it in their own workflow. Audiences connect with that faster than with a commercial message, because it answers the question every professional has: what does this do for my work? It also gives your brand a depth and credibility that a product ad does not reach.
How do we work with photographers and creators as ambassadors?
Choose makers whose audience overlaps with the buyers you want, and give them a real role: showing how they use your gear in their own work, not reading a script. An event is a natural setting for that, because the maker works live in front of an audience and the content follows from it. It is also a good way to test a collaboration before committing to a long-term ambassadorship.
How do we build a community around a photography brand?
Communities grow around shared experiences and learning, not around a product alone. Recurring events, masterclasses with makers, content that helps people improve their work and places where photographers meet each other create that. Every Behind the Shoot edition adds participants, content and relationships that your brand can keep in touch with afterwards.
Results and working together
How do we measure the results of a photography event?
Choose one conversion number that fits your product before the event, such as demo requests, dealer visits, trial downloads or promo code redemptions. Set up unique promo codes and UTM tracking per partner and per channel, and measure over the weeks after the event, when most purchases happen. Next to that, report reach and engagement of the campaign and the content, split between professionals and enthusiasts.
What does a brand need to organise itself?
Nothing beyond the gear and, ideally, a product specialist on the day. Behind the Shoot handles the concept, the venue, the sets, the makers, the models, the campaign, registrations and the content.
How does a brand get started with Behind the Shoot?
It starts with an intro call of about half an hour. We walk through the options and discuss your marketing challenge and your markets. Then you receive a proposal with the market, the format, the maker and the content we make for you.
Who is behind Behind the Shoot?
Behind the Shoot is a marketing and branding agency for creator brands, founded by Laurence de Groot and Jeroen Nieuwstad. The team has organised many inspiration and activation events, workshops and roadshows for photographers, hybrid shooters and creators internationally, most of them sold out within days, and works with a large international network of makers, brands, distributors and retailers.
